How to erase your hard disk

So you are donating or getting rid of your old computer and want to make sure you didn’t leave any confidential data behind.  Simply deleting the files is not good enough.  All operating systems don’t delete files when you delete them; They just delete the references to the files in the file system. Here is how to erase your hard disk.

There are several ways to completely delete everything on a hard disk.  The method below is one way that I have used and verified the data destruction.

Step 1. Before you begin be sure to back up everything you want to keep.  After wiping the hard drive, there is no way to recover any data from it. ScreenClip

Step 2. If the hard drive is the one, you boot off of you will need to download a program that boots from a CD or USB drive to wipe the drive.  The program I recommend is DBAN. Download a copy of DBAN from It will download as an ISO file that can be burned directly to a CDROM using a program like ImgBurn ( The CDROM will be bootable.

Step 3.  Insert the CDROM and boot.  Then Wipe the drive from the interactive menu.

After properly cleaning a hard drive, you can be certain that whatever information was on the drive is now gone forever. You can now install a fresh copy of Windows on the drive, sell or give away the hard drive or computer, recycle or dispose of it.
